Can a movie influence our vote? It has become very common for political-themed movies to be released in the Telugu states before elections. This is not something that has just started recently. In 1987, a controversial movie called Mandaladheeshudu was made about the then-Chief Minister NT Rama Rao. In 2019, Ram Gopal Varma released a movie called Lakshmi’s Ntr, which revealed personal details about the Nara and Nandamuri families before the 2019 elections.
Right now, two movies are being made under the name of Vyooham for the 2024 elections. They are trying to portray Jagan character positively by mentioning the personal lifes of Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan. The plan is to release these two parts before the election notifications are issued. Key leaders from the YSRCP also attended the pre-release event which was named as Vyooham Jaga Garjana .
Every day, we witness the state of our society: crumbling roads, inadequate healthcare, struggling schools, and scarce opportunities. These, not fabricated scandals, should guide our choice of leaders. When was the last time we needed political “dramas” if real progress was being made?
Movies can be a powerful tool for persuasion, and they can be used to manipulate people’s opinions. It is important to be aware of this when watching political movies, and to think critically about the information that is being presented.
